tunerfreemce win7 proxy reset "access denied"

Postby skavan » Thu Jan 06, 2011 7:02 pm

Hi,

Question for the gurus. I have tunerfreemce (tfm) happily running and have a UK proxy that I want to switch in and out using the tfm batchfile calling capabilities.

I have created two batch files that use netsh to set and reset the proxy. Both work fine when run in an elevated command prompt - as an administrator. The reset proxy DOES NOT WORK (access denied) if run in a non-elevated command prompt - even if I am logged in as part of the adminstrators group.

When using tfm, when it calls the reset batch file (closeUKVPN.BAT), it errors with an access denied (presumably due to the same issue as noted above). The question is - how do I fix this? It obviously can be fixed otherwise this excellent article wouldn't have been written:

Any ideas? Thanks.

Yea, some VPNs need you to run as an administrator. The way to do that is to start media center as an administrator - i.e. right click on it and pick run as administrator. You can also change the properties to have it always run as an administrator.

I fixed the problem, so for the benefit of others, here's the problem & the solution:
1. In my scenario I can't run MCE as an admin, because this is a wife friendly HTPC.
2. I need to run the VPN commands with Admin rights

The solution is to add a task to task scheduler (and tell it to run as an admin) to run the VPN command and then launch the task. In this way it runs with admin rights and all is fine.

Hope it helps.

H,

this all sounds to witchcraft to me as I'm an utter newbie with zero knoweldge of programming.

All i want is to be able to have the vpn automaticlly switch depending on whcih channel i select or be able to switch it from remote from off to the UK or to US depending on which stations/programming i want to watch - is this at all possible?

I suggest you try following the step by step instructions. They should work without you actually having to understand every (or any) step that you are doing.
